| Just came back from a six days stay in the Royal Olympic - have to say, with very mixed feelings. The location is excellent, walking distance to the Acropolis, Plaka, Syntagma square. Staff reasonably helpful - especially the staff at breakfast, they were very nice. They couldn't provide with any tourist information, though - all they could give us was the flyer of a travel agency. One of the main reasons which attracted us to this hotel was the heated pool and the pool bar with live piano music. Although the weather was really good - had been around 20 degrees for the week we were there and the week before, they were closed for "winter". I wonder if heated means that in the summer the sun will heat the pool because I could hardly imagine it needs any extra heating in that period. We booked a standard room with pool view. The room wasn't quite up to a 5 stars standard. Hard bed, a small bathtub, no robes. Not very bad but not quite there. The 5 stars kicked in when we looked at the minibar prices, though! 7.5 EUR for a 330ml beer, 9 EUR for a mini bottle of gin. 15 EUR to get breakfast in bed - I imagine this was just the fee for the service because breakfast was included in our deal. Although it was March, the room got quite warm during the day and we tried to use the air conditioning – only to find out that it wasn’t AC at all, it was just a noisy fan which didn’t make any difference at all. It wasn’t quite that big of a problem for us but I can imagine it could be a disaster in summer time. And then, on Monday morning, came the worse. They started hammering and welding on the fire escape on the building opposite to us (belonging to the hotel). Quite a nightmare when all you wanted was getting away for a few days and relax! We tried to ask for a different room but it was not possible – the only option they offered us was to get an upgrade to suite for 120 EUR per night, way too much for our budget. They also told us that the bed is exactly the same in all the standard rooms. We did check two suites, nevertheless, and they did really look 5* - excellent sound proof windows, large tub, large bathroom, large room, even the beds were in a completely different category – I can’t remember about the AC, though. In conclusion, don’t really expect 5* at the Royal Olympic unless you pay the extra for one of those suites. |
