Marriott Hotel Heidelberg

Was disappointed with this hotel as I do not think it is of a standard that is usually associated with Marriott Hotels. After long deliberation chose this hotel, despite the fact it is not in the lovely old town of Heidelberg and indeed a good distance outside it as we were hoping for a bit of luxury and style and thought it was worth the inconvenience of being outside town ... it wasn't! We requested a romantic room if possible and got instead one with a wheelchair accesable bathroom which was very hospital like. Also no tv remote, no welcome pack/hotel info/room service info, only one bed side table, no tea/coffee making facilities, no rbe, no slippers and only a small double bed. We had to wait nearly an hour and make 5 phone calls to get a tv remote. We did get a room change on day three to a very nice king-size bedded room with balcony. However both rooms needed a good dusting! Pay tv, mini-bar, pool, outside breakfast area next to river were nice. Hotel location not great, next to the river but long walk from old town (25 min strolling on not particularly nice walk despite being next to river. Breakfast buffet not particularly exciting, though staff good. 2 euro for 20 min internet use and when session ends your open webpages are left on display and only when the next customer puts in his money can they be removed (or accessed, I imagine by next user which was not good). We got a great value deal with Yeego but wish we had chosen many of the very nice hotels with prime scenic locations also overlooking the river but actually in the old town like the Vieryahrzeiter, or the heidelberg hoff and I heard good reports of the Alter Bruck and the Nauserhoff looked worth investigating further. The hightly rated Villa Marsall however did not look like anything much from the outside despite its No 1 Tripadvisor rating and high prices.

The rooms were clean (and those facing the street were quiet). That part of town is pretty removed from any attractions, so there is not much to do. I asked the concierge for a restaurant recommendation near the hotel. He said that there were none (actually there is a very good restaurant near the petrol station). I ate dinner at one of their two restaurants for dinner (it looked like a gastropub). The food was filling, nothing extraordinary. The beer was fresh (although one of my glasses had a piece of plastic floating in it).
